Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had conceded 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in a long-running conflict with club owner Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or did there exist a binding element holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this season. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star then never playing him."

Discovering His Best Role

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
